Oaktown Jazz Workshops offers intensive instructional workshops for young musicians, ages 12-18. These year-round workshops are the core program of OJW and consist of instrumental ensembles that focus on improvisation, ear training and learning tunes in a hands-on, “jam session” environment with professional jazz musicians. The point is to have fun while making good music.
Tuesdays 4PM-6PM @ 55 Washington Street in Jack London Square, Oakland
Our Tuesday workshop is where young musicians learn to improvise solos on their instruments while playing different types of jazz and blues tunes in a band setting. Students should have some experience on their instruments (school band, individual lessons, etc.)

Traditionally, young musicians learned to play jazz by hanging out with more experienced professional musicians in their neighborhood and after-hours in bars and nightclubs. In more recent times young musicians have learned to play in school bands where the focus is on reading music. By employing professional jazz musicians as instructors, Oaktown Jazz Workshops uses the traditional model to offer a distinctive approach to jazz instruction that gives students a foundation in the jazz fundamentals of improvisation, arranging and learning to play by ear.
Our students benefit from their instructors’ collective years of experience as performers and their highly developed sensitivity to the unique dynamics that set jazz apart from other disciplines.
